Playing at Canterbury is always interesting because of field conditions. Their field hockey field is very short, narrow and bumpy. Add to that a stiff 35 mph wind which kept blowing one of the goalie cages over, and some interesting calls by officials, it was , well, an interesting game. The Mustangs handily defeated Canterbury 5-1. We dominated from the opening minutes on offense but due to lack of space, it was hard to score. Canterbury packs their circle, and because the ball bounced so much on crosses, something we're not used to, many golden opportunities to score vanished. The score at half time was 2-0. Fallon scored first off a cross from Whalen, who earned an assist. Burdis scored #2 with an assist to M. Chapman. Nelson in goal did make two amazing saves as Canterbury had one dangerous offensive play in the first half.
In the second half, with most of our support players on the field, Millbrook earned several corners but could not capitalize until corner #6, when Chapman would wail on the ball from the right, a real zinger that hit the back of the net. Steele-Norton notched #4 and Chapman #5 on a corner hit. Morris in goal made two great saves about half way through the second half. The goal that Canterbury scored was a picture perfect cross that a well-positioned forward connected with. Nothing Morris could have done to prevent that goal. There was some nice play by our younger members -- Anthony, Roemer, Chapman and Landesberg. Nice to get them all in the game.
