Millbrook Students Visit the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
Advanced Biology students visited the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute as part of their curriculum on regulation of gene expression and biotechnology on April 26.
“This experience allowed students to see an active research facility with scientists pursuing real-life questions using state-of-the-art technology,” said science department faculty member Ava Goodale ’01.
Students toured the microscopy core, bioimaging core, and research labs.
“My favorite part about the visit was learning about RPI's vertical gardening hydroponics experiment. The ways they have to calibrate every environmental factor so precisely in order for the plants to flourish is fascinating,” said Olly Cohen ‘16.
RPI is well-known for its success in the transfer of technology from the laboratory to the marketplace across scientific disciplines. Their new discoveries and inventions have benefited human life, the environment, and economic development.
“This was really cumulative of the students’ entire science experience at Millbrook,” said Ms. Goodale ’01 in reference to how students were challenged to combine their knowledge of physics, chemistry, and biology throughout the tour.
All of the students who participated in the trip have demonstrated a committment to science, and many are insterested in pursuing research after Millbrook. The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute offerred an environment where students could reflect on what they have learned at Millbrook, while also observing and contemplating current research at the graduate level.
Thank you to the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute for welcoming us to your campus. A fun and educational day was had by all.
