Mustangs Celebrate Senior Day with 7-6 Thriller

The Millbrook Varsity Softball team beat Gunnery, 7-6, in a thriller of a game on Wednesday afternoon. Having just lost a tough game to Gunnery on Saturday, the Mustangs bounced back in a big way - a perfect way to celebrate senior day. Gunnery got on the board first in the top of the first, but Millbrook tied it up at 1-1 in the bottom of the frame when Jessie Foote '18 singled and was brought home on a triple to right field by captain Riley Croghan '18. Gunnery added another in the second, but Millbrook again tied it up in the third, when Jackie Crowley '20 singled, made her way around the bases on a passed ball, and then scored on a wild pitch. Gunnery went up 5-2 in the top of the fifth, but Millbrook clawed back to take the lead with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Emma Gotthelf '19, Foote, Croghan, and Helene Apollon '19 (RBI) all scored on a combination of hits, walks, and heads-up baserunning. Kelly Phan '18, Helen Boone '19, and Sam Besca '18 (RBI) also got on base to extend the inning and help bring home the runners. Croghan held Gunnery scoreless in the top of the sixth to maintain Millbrook's 6-5 lead. in the bottom of the sixth, Crogan and Apollon had back-to-back two-out singles, and Aria Bowden '18 brought home Croghan with a single for a crucial insurance run. That run was vital when Gunnery added one back in the top of the seventh, before Gunnery's last batter hit a long fly ball that nestled harmlessly in the glove of Apollon to end the game. It was a great team effort and indicative of the heart of this group - particularly the five seniors: Jessie Foote, Aria Bowden, Kelly Phan, Sam Besca, and Riley Croghan. Huge thanks to them for all of their contributions this year and in their careers - we will miss you!
