Great offense & defense ends up in tie against South Kent

The Cardinals of South Kent, last year’s New England champion, came to Millbrook Saturday. The contest which ensued was a classic battle between opposites. South Kent brought a number of highly skilled individuals to face a Millbrook squad which prides itself on tenacious team play. The contrast was apparent early. South Kent’s elite players made forays down field, only to be stymied by the defensive play of the Mustangs. After trading opportunities for nearly 30 minutes, Mauri took a fine through pass around the defense and scored to put the home team ahead. The lead was short-lived; South Kent retaliated less than a minute later. Momentum swung to the Cardinals, who scored again on a well struck ball from Portillo. Regrouping at the half, Millbrook stormed back into the contest. The Mustangs applied relentless pressure, and caused confusion in the defensive third. Baldo’s goal with less than 15 to play evened the contest. From this point, South Kent weathered the onslaught created by Millbrook, turning away several scoring bids. Each side managed one more superb chance before settling for the tie. Millbrook standouts this afternoon were Mills, Lehrecke and Augustine, who played superb defensive soccer in the back. In addition, Abbott and A. Navarro produced great work up front, supported nicely by Bailly and Benjamin in the midfield.
