The Mustangs defeated a determined and skilled Westover team 2 to 1 on a gorgeous fall day in front of an enthusiastic crowd of parent spectators. Westover came out to win and had the team to do it this year. Westover had several tall players who could really move the ball. They were especially aggressive on corner hits with a take-no-prisoners style of play. However, through sheer grit and determination, coupled with some exciting fast breaks, something our forwards have perfected to an art form, the lady Mustangs prevailed. The opening minutes of the game went Millbrook's way as the team pressured a tentative Westover, barely missing the goal on several offensive scrums. Millbrook notched our first goal at 20:19 off a penalty corner hit taken by Kane, Zublin scoring off the rebound. Kane with an assist. The game went end to end, both teams having opportunities to score but unable to finish. Senior goalie Maglaque proved to be very tough, defending three hard shots off of five back to back penalty corners. The score remained 1-0 at halftime.
The second half started off promising as the hard work of the midfield, especially Fracchia, who proved yet again to be one tough cookie, gave forwards Anthony and VonKlencke several fast break opportunities. At 28:12, on our second penalty corner, Kane passed the injection to Burdis who cracked it off the back boards. Assist to Kane on Millbrook's second goal. Three minutes later, Westover answered back, scoring on a penalty corner over Maglaque who had fallen after making her first great save, but was unable to clear the rebound from her prone position. Westover never quit and continued to pressure Millbrook until the closing minutes. With 6 seconds left in the game, speedy VonKlencke ran the ball down the right wing, crossed to Zublin who pounced, scoring, we believe, right on the buzzer, but Westover contested the goal. Whether it counted or not, it sure was a beautiful ending to a tough, well-played game.
