The lady Mustangs may have lost their field hockey game to Loomis, but they are winners as far as I am concerned. In our first true game as a whole team (we were a partial squad in our Ethel Walker contest) the team played hard, skillful, intelligent field hockey. They were not intimidated by Loomis' size and stick handling capabilities. In fact, the Mustangs held Loomis scoreless until the last minute of the first half, when the ball slipped in off a melee in front of goal. During the first half, Adi Fracchia was to make her first of two sensational goal line saves. Unlike last year, when our defense gave up eleven penalty corners and our attack only earned two, in this contest, corners given and received were almost equal, showing the true back and forth nature of the game. Millbrook had many real opportunities to score.
Going into the second half, we played even but with 15 minutes left, fatique started to set in. Loomis scored their second goal off a beautiful corner hit/deflection to the left post. Morrison in goal had a spectacular game, being extremely nimble and aggressive. She ended the day with 7 saves. Although down two goals, the Mustangs countered with several fine offensive plays in the closing minutes spearheaded by Anthony, Burdis and VonKlencke. Off a corner hit, Millbrook almost duplicated Loomis' second goal, a nice corner hit from Kane, deflected in by Zublin on the left post, but it hit her foot and the goal was discounted. A tough break. The entire team is to be congratulated for playing hard, intelligent and composed hockey for 60 full minutes.
