Millbrook's remarkable season came to a close on Sunday morning when we played the Lumberjacks of Hebron Academy in the tournament final at Northfield Mount Hermon School. Having managed to get past the 2nd and 3rd seeds earlier in the week, the Mustangs could not unseat the defending champions. Hebron came into the match with a 36 game unbeaten streak and a senior-laden team of experience and skill. Using careful passing and laser-accurate shooting, Hebron was quickly ahead and in control of the game. For all intents and purposes, the contest was over before the half.
To our credit, the Mustangs did their best to play out the match. We shook ourselves at the half and resolved to play our best game. Our defense rallied without the injured Colman. Tardio scored a nifty goal, an opportunistic header off a Bouda rebound, midway through the second half, much to the consternation of the Hebron faithful. The entire team saw the field as the morning unfolded. In addition to the usual stalwarts, Moriarty, D'Urso and Lowry turned in notable performances. Although it was not the outcome we had imagined, the Mustangs finished the all-New England tournament in second place. It is quite a remarkable achievement and speaks to the determination and effort the bunch put into their time together this fall.
