Millbrook hits big shots on way to victory

Coach Powers
Due to a brief but wet deluge of rain, Millbrook took on a talented squad from Hotchkiss indoors, playing 8 game pro sets.  With a solid crowd watching we started with the doubles.   Both teams had a few illnesses and absences, and Mansell Ambrose '14 and Lydia Starke '16 came up from JV to play an exhibition match.  They ended up playing two of the best players from the Hotchkiss team as their coach did her best to honor the no overlap format.  The lost 8-0 to Essig and Bilroy.  At # 3 doubles, Storey Schifter '16 and another JV player, Daisy Flortron '15, played a consistent and steady match to defeat two talented players, Xu and Quatroche, 8-3.  Thanks so much to Mansell, Daisy and Lydia for playing with us today!  Playing #2 doubles was Sayre Reimer '13 and Iona Moir '15.  Sayre was steady from the backcourt and Iona seemed to be everywhere all at once!  They defeated Ahn and Lee 8-2.  The doubles match of the day was at #1 were Julia May '14 and Julia Freund '16 found themselves for this match.  They continued their unbeaten streak in an exciting 8-6 match that featured some fine double sand much applause and admiration from the crowd.  Thus, we went into the singles in a commanding position 3-0.

Playing her first singles match of the year, Alix Creel '15 drew Lee at #4.  Lee took advantge of short balls and rarely missed on the way to the victory.  Captain Eleanor Sednaoui '13 was playing #3 against Bilroy. After getting down 7-3, she fought back with accurate forehand winners and great angles to get back to 7-6.  After a long game with many deuces, she fell 8-6.  At #2 Sophia Hartman '16 kept her unbeaten streak alive as well.  Using deep heavy groundstrokes, a deadly first serve and flashing a true all court game, she pulled away from her opponent, Quatroche, 8-2.  It was the best I have seen her play and it was sinmply a joy to watch.  The last match of the day was at #1 where Isabel Seaborn '16 faced off with Essig.  Hitting huge topspin serves, foerehand and backhands, Isabel won 8-5.  It waqs the best she has played this year and it was great to see her so aggressive!

I am so happy for the girls and proud of the obvious improvements to their doubles and singles play.  We get right back after tomorrow at King (Stamford) to morrow at 2:30.
