Millbrook Girls XC Team Are New England Champs!
It was an unbelievable finish to a great season for Millbrook Girls Cross Country.
Those who were here at the Division IV Championship yesterday saw Millbrook at its best, with gorgeous running weather, the course in beautiful shape - even after the snow we got Wednesday - tons of faculty, parent, and student volunteers, and some lights-out racing. The girls' field of about 100 runners fanned out across the length of the boys' varsity soccer field, and sprinted for the woods.
At the first mile mid-way up ski hill, Chloe Naese was in first and Olivia Dolan in second, at a gutsy pace just over 6 minutes. Runners from Pingree, Montrose, and Williams were hot in pursuit, and by mile 2, Dolan and Naese were a bit back, but surging on the hill. Just behind Naese was freshman phenom Kelsey McEvoy, whose eyes looked hungry and locked onto the runners ahead of her, and Elizabeth Lowe, steadily gaining. Charlotte Kasmin was about a minute behind them, and also surging up that final hill. The finish was thrilling.
First place went to Pingree's Madeline Dwortz in 22:00 flat. Dolan finished 4th in 22:40; Naese was 9th in 23:10. McEvoy was 16th and Lowe 18th - all four runners qualifying for the all-star race next Saturday. Kasmin finished 25th, and Emma Feitelson, in her PR on the course by more than a minute, took 28th. These great finishes brought Millbrook the first place title, with 58 points, beating Pingree with 62! Millbrook fared well in the JV competition as well, with Sarah Dietrich taking first and Emily Straus taking second! Congratulations to all the schools that competed. It was a very proud moment for the coaches and Millbrook School. To view complete results, please visit Cool Runnings website.
Without the tireless efforts of Alan Tousignant, who reinforced and expanded all three bridges on our beautiful course, and Karen Hansell, who handled all of the logistics from parking to post-race food to coordinating all the volunteers, this event would never have been possible. Meet Director Coach Tolfree, Coach Davis and I, and our athletic directo Ed Allen, offer Karen and Dr. T our heartfelt thanks. Thank you too, to all the parents who volunteered and supported us yesterday, and all season long. You are the best!
