Millbrook at Ethel Walker

What an incredible way to begin our 2007 season. Missing all of our talented and hard hitting sophomores and two juniors, the very "abbreviated" varsity squad, with the important help of two junior varsity players (newcomer Dale Mauri who played an awesome left wing, and junior Megan Butts), not only defeated Ethel Walker on Saturday, but dominated most of the game. Because it is so early in the season, I was mostly concerned with fitness; that with only one sub, we couldn't run with EW. I couldn't have been more wrong. The varsity team-- forwards Dale Mauri, Alex Fresne, Valentina vonKlencke; three mids-- Molly Chapman, Mimi Anthony, Kristen Zublin, and four backs--Hillary Kane, Allie Ehrenreich, Mary Rose Morrison and Molly Zimnoch, ran like mid-season athletes, hustling after every ball and executing some fine stickwork for so early in the season. The team used width well, ran the attack down the sides, and made some great flat and through passes which lead, utlimately, to two goals. The first goal came at 5:45 in the first half on a cross from Kane to Anthony who scored. Ethel Walker scored in the second half at 27:20. Goalie Jane Maglaque made a fine first save (one of 5 saves) but the defense wasn't bale to clear, and in the ensuing scrum in front of goal, the ball eked over the endline. With less than 10 minutes to go, Valentina scored from the right off a pass from Fresne. Newcomers Chapman and Kane played very well, as did veteran Zimnoch at sweeper, who showed true determination in the back defensive position. Kudos, too, to Mary Rose Morrison who came out of goal to play left back, proving yet again that she is an incrediblly versatile athlete. Congratulations to the team for a good win.
