Power of Love: Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Millbrook honored the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a day of conversation, celebration, reflection, and service. The school community gathered in the Chelsea Morrison Theater for a program that kicked off with drumming and dance by the West African Dance Group, followed by a motivational piano performance by Millbrook’s own Mike Johnson, a lesson on voting rights by Kathy Havard, and a poetry reading by Marvelous Aderibigbe '26.

 

Journalist and educator Micha Green hosted a panel on the Power of Love featuring Bria Horsley '14, Kojo Clarke, Alpana Chhibber, and Dwight Vidale. Dr. King’s 1967 speech "Where Do We Go From Here?" was used as a starting point for a discussion about power and justice and the role of love. Students and faculty shared their insights with panelists and each other.

 

The community next gathered at Mills Athletic Center where they assembled care packages and wrote notes for clients of Hudson River Housing, a Poughkeepsie-based nonprofit that seeks to create and maintain quality affordable housing and other services in underserved local communities.

 

Rounding out the day, Alpana Chhibber conducted workshops on implicit bias and micro-aggressions for all students. Prince Botchway, Millbrook’s Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, once again programmed a thoughtful and engaging day which both celebrated how far we have come and reminded us how much work is left to do in pursuit of justice, equity, and freedom.
