In their win against Canterbury, the Mustangs proved they're not only a
skillful team, but a team that can keep its composure, stick to its
gameplan, and win against a scrappy, physical team on a short, narrow,
bumpy field. During the first half, Millbrook dominated but both teams
went end to end, testing each other, Millbrook having many more serious
offensive opportunities but not able to capitalize. Millbrook earned 6
offensive corners in the first half and the corner unit scored (a high
deflection off Zublin's stick) but the goal was discounted. There was
no score at halftime. Both teams came out fired up at the beginning of
the second half. About 4 minutes in, Zimnoch took a free hit at the top
of the circle, Anthony got her stick on it, Zublin scored on a
deflection off the left post. Anthony and Zimnoch with assists. A mere
3 minutes later, Millbrook scored off a corner hit by Kane; Anthony
finishing the job finding the back of the net. Canterbury was getting
frustrated at this point. One player was removed for a 5 minute
suspension for pushing but instead of holding back, Canterbury
attacked, hard. They pressured every ball and the physical nature of
the game intensified but the Mustangs proved their worth. They didn't
allow their opponents to get into their heads. They kept their cool,
played the ball wide, backed each other up, kept talking through every
play. In the closing minutes, our defense was sorely tested as
Canterbury pulled out all the stops. Goalie Morrison made several
fantastic saves. Her clears have improved radically becoming a true
offensive weapon. Sweeper Small proved a solid wall in the back.
Anthony played a very strong game thoughout, showing her defensive
capabilities to be as strong as her offensive ones. A great win for the
Mustangs against a team that has stymied us in the past.
