book by John August, music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa
Based on the novel by Daniel Wallace
Edward Bloom, a traveling salesman, lives a life of incredible adventure in his stories, but his son Will, about to become a father himself, finds these tales unbelievable and seeks the truth. The musical shifts between the present, where Will confronts his father's mortality, and the past, where a young Edward encounters fantastical characters and falls in love with his wife, Sandra.
Edward's stories bring to life a world of mythical creatures (witches, giants, mermaids) and extraordinary events, blending fantasy with the reality of his life. The show explores reconciliation, identity, the meaning of life, the bond between fathers and sons, and how stories shape our understanding of ourselves and others.
The "Big Fish" represents the extraordinary, larger-than-life tales Edward tells, and the journey Will takes to find the real "big fish" – the man behind the myth.
