Stanley the Lynx Receives Visit from Old Friend

Aaron Case
Stanley the Canadian Lynx has called the Trevor-Lovejoy Zoo home since 2023, but for the first 18 months of his life, he lived at the Seneca Park Zoo in Rochester, New York. On Friday, he received a visit from an old friend, Kellee Wolowitz.

The assistant curator at the Seneca Park Zoo, Wolowitz still cares for Stanley’s mother. When Millbrook VIth former and zoo curator Lucy Kim ’27 requested lynx bedding from Stanley’s mother for her Advanced Science Research project, Wolowitz volunteered to deliver it and visit her former charge.

In addition to the reunion with Stanley, Wolowitz toured the zoo with Director of Animal Care Kyleen Depew. Wolowitz, who last visited Millbrook when she brought Stanley here in 2023, noted that she appreciates the natural setting at the Trevor-Lovejoy Zoo, a unique benefit that small zoos such as ours can provide.

As an Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) accredited zoo, the Trevor-Lovejoy Zoo is part of a community of passionate professionals who coordinate to further environmental conservation. These organizations coordinate to preserve endangered species and care for animals of all kinds, and transferring animals between zoos to optimize welfare is just one way they work together to better the planet.

Stewardship of the natural world is one of Millbrook School’s core values, a value that students and faculty live out in the real-world classroom that is the Trevor-Lovejoy Zoo. Thanks to partner zoos like the Seneca Park Zoo and the AZA, we’re able to provide our students with an education in conservation that reaches far beyond campus, through animal transfers, AZA Conference trips, hands-on veterinary experience, and so much more.
