Alumni Writes Music for ‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’
Aaron Case
Rufus Wainwright ’91 is a perfect example of a Millbrook graduate boldly going where no one has gone before. The renowned musician from Rhinebeck, New York, has toured the world, been nominated for Grammy Awards, and appeared in feature films, and now he’s back with a cover of Scott McKenzie’s “San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair)” for the first episode of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.
Wainwright worked with composer Jeff Russo to record the song. An orchestral version of the original, the tune scored a scene of the USS Athena docking at Starfleet Academy in a futuristic San Francisco.
This is not Wainwright’s first foray into the film and television soundtrack business. His music has also appeared in movies like Zoolander, I Am Sam, and Shrek, to name a few.
At Millbrook, our prime directive is to train students for lives of meaning and consequence, so we love seeing alumni like Wainwright live long and prosper on the global stage.
