Millbrook offers
student-run clubs formed around a variety of interests typical to high school students, like anime, chess, movies, sports, and more. But some clubs are about more than fun and games. At The Recap, founded by Elias Castro ’27 and Mesha Thomas ’27, students dig into the complicated worlds of finance and politics by discussing relevant news articles.
“Our one-liner is, ‘How government legislation and geopolitical conflicts throughout the world influence equity markets and our day-to-day lives,’” says Mesha. He goes on to explain that his original idea for the club was to focus on equity markets, a personal interest. However, he realized the value of bringing in Elias, whose interests lie in the world of geopolitics, to offer club participants a broader view of markets and their stressors.
In addition to discussing recent news articles, The Recap runs a website where they publish student articles, and they host experts from the financial and government sectors for fireside chats. The latest expert to join the club was
Dr. Judith Feder, a Georgetown professor Elias met through his work with
Whitestone Legislative Advocacy and at the UN over the summer.
The group spent over an hour with Dr. Feder, who teaches public policy and has extensive experience in health policy, including serving at the Department of Health and Human Services in the Clinton administration. Topics they discussed included healthcare affordability, politics, and economics. When students asked for advice regarding political and policymaking aspirations, she offered sage advice:
“There’s not a straight path. Follow what interests you. Get involved. Get engaged. Do things like [this meeting]. Soak up as much as you can from other people who have been there and just take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way.”
According to Mesha, students dropped in and out throughout the event, peaking at nine highly engaged participants. The success of the evening will hopefully lead to more special guests from Elias and Mesha’s impressive professional networks.
Mesha’s pitch to students who may be considering attending The Recap is simple: “If you even have the slightest interest in anything to do with politics and government…this would be a good starting point. And even if you're not a consistent member, you can grab some useful information from one meeting.”
The Recap is an inspiring example of students taking a proactive approach to their education. While Millbrook provides expert faculty and guests to guide students, it’s exciting to see the training for future success yielding profound results before they even begin their college and professional careers. That’s what a Millbrook education is all about.
