Grandparents Day is already known as the happiest day of the year at Millbrook School. On Wednesday, the 2026 edition of Grandparents Day was also a record-breaking affair, as over 230 grandparents joined their grandchildren for a day on campus.
This year, the format changed a bit, as our special guests went immediately from registration to Flagler Memorial Chapel for a State of the School address by
Head of School Jonathan Downs ’98. He updated the visitors on the many ways the school is thriving, from campus
construction projects to its continued focus on teaching students to pursue truth through critical thinking. Perhaps most importantly, though, he reminded grandparents to make the most of their time with their grandchildren.
“I hope you have a magical day with your grandchild,” he encouraged. “Hold them, hug them, and enjoy them every second. I need not tell any of you that this time is precious. There is no pause button. So, I'll end by yelling—yelling at you like I yell at your grandchild: stay off your phones, be present, hug tightly.”

Following that advice, grandparents then joined their grandchildren for two class blocks. Attending classes gave them an up-close look at the Millbrook student experience that has propelled so many to success since 1931. The academic day ended with lunch at
Casertano Hall, where grandparents and students lined up for pictures to commemorate the precious moments they shared throughout the day.
The happiest day on campus ended with athletic games on the turf and North Fields, where the Mustangs played their hearts out in front of their grandparents. They were treated to thrilling action, as the girls varsity field hockey team
defeated Canterbury School 1-0 and the boys varsity soccer team came up just short in a 3-2 loss to Greens Farms Academy.
Grandparents Day is one of the many
traditions that makes life at Millbrook so special. We’re happy that so many grandparents were able to make the trip this year, and we’d love to break the attendance record again next fall!
