Millbrook Goes Green for Earth Week

Aaron Case
At Millbrook, we celebrate the Earth every day, as one of the core values we live by is stewardship of the natural world. So, when Earth Day rolls around, we go extra big, extending our celebration of nature to an entire week.

Campus events included conservation-themed documentaries screened in the theater by the environmental council, a visit from baby farm animals during a special locally sourced lunch, and lots of Hudson Valley Fresh chocolate milk. The dining hall also hosted interactive displays from the Trevor-Lovejoy Zoo and Dutchess Land Conservancy. But the highlight of our celebration was cleanup day, when the entire community joined forces to care for nature by picking up trash, recycling, spreading mulch, pulling weeds and even traveling to Amenia to spring cleaning at Comida de Vida food pantry on Earth Day.

The weather was perfect, and students worked in groups based on their sports teams and athletic alternatives. After gathering in Pulling Quad to collect supplies, the teams spread out to rejuvenate the land, going from campus and the zoo to as far north as Pugsley Hill Road and as far south as Fraleigh Hill Road. Students and faculty were seen hauling bags of trash, filling wheelbarrows with weeds and leaves, and even rolling a tire down School Road as they did their part to care for the environment.

Following the hard day’s work, everyone reconvened for a community picnic—featuring a Milly Thrift popup where students and faculty purchased gently used clothes to support sustainability—and a sunset hike up the hilly farmland north of campus. A few brave souls also rose early the next day for a sunrise hike.

Focus on service and conservation truly set Millbrook apart from other boarding schools. Here, these buzzwords are more than noise; they’re calls to action that we, as a community, follow not just during Earth Week but on a daily basis.
