Late Goals Make The Difference

Joe Raciti
A solid all-around effort yielded the first win of the year for the mustangs.
Although Kent scored the first goal of the day, the Millbrook squad never gave up, pouring more and more pressure on the opponent's goal. The mustangs earned their first goal before halftime on a fantastic finish from veteran, Ray Kim. At the half, it was clear that the gang believed they could win: their body language displayed a healthy mix of fatigue and hope.

Deep into the second half, with the game still tied 1-1, we had a bit of a scare when Lorenzo Logrado fell to the ground in pain. I'm relieved to report it turned out to be a dislocated knee. It looked quite bad, but our fantastic trainer was able to pop it back into place after a few minutes.

When the game restarted, it felt like the whole team was playing in Lorenzo's honor. Persistently solid play across the field led to several close chances, including a blast off the foot of Bryce Gelb, whose shot evaded the strong Kent goalie, but was stopped by a dutiful back defender who had positioned himself at the goal line. As frustrating as it was to have so many good chances just barely miss the net, the coaches were proud of the solid play of our guys.

And then our luck changed. Top goal-scorer, Leo Hou, found the back of the net with five minutes left in the game. The Millbrook bench roared. The players on the field, tired as they were after 75 minutes of intense exercise, knew they had to leave everything on the field. They were hoping to lock the game down for five minutes, but instead they were treated to an even better surprise: Leo Hou found the net a second time. The roar from the bench was even louder.

As the clock ran down, the team celebrated their first victory by running to goalie James Magid, who had another outstanding game, and picking him up (as is our tradition).

The coaches are proud of our guys. It really felt like the whole team won today. In the huddle at the end of the game, captain Peter Wilkie, who dominated the backfield all day, led a cheer for Lorenzo. As a coach, there is nothing more rewarding that to see your players care about each other.

Well done, mustangs!

We'd like to thank the Kent coaches for a fun and fair game, and the Kent players who played with heart.
