Millbrook traveled to Cheshire on a Sunday morning for the WNEPSGSBA Division B championship. For a nice change of pace, the weather was perfect for softball.
Millbrook started off the game with a BANG, with Jazmin Mejia ‘25 and Jaicee Downs ‘26 hitting back-to-back home runs to put the Mustangs on the board 2-0. Cheshire came back swinging and put five runs of their own on the board.
In the top of the second inning, Millbrook got another run to cut into Cheshire’s lead before playing good defense with a 1-2-3, six-pitch inning. Mejia had an RBI double to score Arhi Fernandes ‘25 (who had reached base on a walk).
In the bottom of the third inning, Cheshire added to their lead to go up 7-3, but Millbrook then responded in the top of the fourth with three runs to cut the Cheshire lead to 7-6. Matea Podgursky ‘25 got on with a hit, followed by Stella Renzi ‘26 working a walk and Mejia hitting a line drive to center field. The bases were loaded for Downs to hit a two-RBI single. Mejia and Downs were then in a first-and-third situation and executed it BEAUTIFULLY, with multiple pickles for both players and the result being a great side slide at home for Mejia to score. Cheshire led 7-6.
The bottom of the fourth inning saw another great 1-2-3 defensive inning, with Mejia having 2 strikeouts and Abby Hylan ‘25 throwing out an attempted steal.
Cheshire added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth to go ahead 6-10 before the Mustangs scored another in the top of the sixth. Hylan got things started off with a double, followed by Hailey Mesard ‘25 working a walk. Fernandes then had an RBI hit to score Hylan.
Going into the bottom of the sixth, the score was 7-10. Cheshire then tacked on four runs to expand their lead. In the top of the seventh inning, Millbrook had great contact but just couldn’t quite find the holes.
All game, the Mustang bats made good contact. Cheshire had some good defensive plays to keep our runners off base, and Millbrook wasn’t always able to get the timely hit. Overall, though, a really great team effort today. We will miss our 11 seniors and appreciate all they have given to this program. The coaches are proud of this team and their efforts all season!
Now, off to prom!
