Opening Days Imbue Campus with Passion & Purpose
At long last, opening days have arrived, filling every space on campus with the purpose and passion that can only come from teenagers energetically preparing for a new year of boarding school in the unique Millbrook community.
Kids came back in bunches, starting with student leaders on Tuesday. These leaders—including prefects, Trevor-Lovejoy Zoo curators, and more—serve essential roles on campus, shaping the student culture and serving as mediators between the student body and the faculty. To prepare for leadership in the coming year, they attended faculty-led sessions all over campus, including on the low ropes course, where they worked in teams to traverse tightropes, swinging tire gauntlets, and rock-climbing walls, pausing after each challenge to reflect on how the skills required to complete the tasks connect to their responsibilities within the community.
Remaining returners moved in on Wednesday, and over 100 new members of the community officially joined on Thursday. The new students were warmly welcomed by faculty and veteran students, who had clearly listened to Head of School Jonathan Downs ’98’s admonishment during Wednesday’s all-returner assembly to practice empathy, remembering how they felt when they made their first trip down School Road.
With everyone present and accounted for, the year officially began, with camaraderie-building activities on the turf field, dorm orientations, and a cookout with lawn games on the quad. The high energy levels lasted until the next morning, when both faculty and students eased back into structured academic days, starting with Assembly in the Flagler Memorial Chapel followed by a modified class schedule and athletic practices.

Amazing things are sure to come as the school year unfolds, from scientific discoveries in the Hamilton Math and Science Center to thrilling victories on the athletic fields to creative growth in Holbrook Arts Center. But most importantly, lifelong relationships will be forged and fostered in a community where every member is truly known and needed—and it all starts now!
