2026 Science Symposium

Science is a big deal at Millbrook. Students have the unique opportunity to study nature at the Trevor-Lovejoy Zoo and across 800 acres of marshland and forests, and there are countless opportunities for sociological study in a community with hundreds of teenagers and adults. So, one of the highlights of the school year is the annual Science Symposium, when our Advanced Science Research students present their findings from yearlong projects.

This year six students presented, showcasing rigorous research on a variety of exciting topics. Their college-level work encompassed scientific papers, posters, and oral presentations of their processes and findings. Led by Dr. Kerry Dore, the young scientists studied endangered animals in the zoo, the local ecosystem, neurology, and virology:

  • Max Amsterdam '26 — Every Otter Day: Effects of Waterfall Access and Enrichment on Stress and Behavior in North American River Otters (Lontra canadensis) at the Trevor-Lovejoy Zoo
  • Angelina Edwards '26 — Adolescent Brain Responses to Illusions
  • Ellie Myers '26 — Bioindicators on Campus: Does Millbrook Have a Healthy Freshwater Ecosystem?
  • Ingrid Schmitt '26 — The Impact of Sun Lamps on the Seasonal Behavior, Cortisol Levels, and Appetite of Geoffrey’s Marmosets (Callithrix geoffroy) at the Trevor Lovejoy Zoo
  • Daniel Yang '26 — Antdemic: The Effect of Beauveria bassiana Fungus on the Survivability and Grooming Rate of Pavement Ants (Tetramorium immigrans)
  • Sophie Zhou '26 — The Effect of Bamboo on Behavior and Stress in Red Pandas (Ailurus fulgens) at the Trevor-Lovejoy Zoo

Presentations were crowded with students and faculty curious to find out what the researchers had discovered about campus and its inhabitants. The impressive projects reinforced the fact that there’s no better place for high school students to explore environmental conservation and science than Millbrook. Our scientific resources and expert faculty are unmatched, giving students interested in the sciences a running start when they matriculate to some of the top universities in the world.
