Millbrook alumni and parents gathered on Monday night for the annual New York City reception at a festively decorated New York Yacht Club. Always a time of happy reunions, the highlight of the evening was a tangible sense of community in the room. Alumni and parents caught up over drinks and hors d'oeuvres, embracing, laughing, and, as Head of School Jonathan Downs ’98 put it, “strengthening the connective tissue of Millbrook School.”
In his address, Downs shared exciting updates about what students are up to on campus, including the recent performances of the fall play
Antigone, the success of our new
Interdisciplinary Studies Department, and the boys varsity soccer team bringing home their
seventh NEPSAC championship. Sporting a Millbrook bowtie in a nod to one of the Trevor-Lovejoy Zoo’s namesakes, the late Dr. Thomas Lovejoy ’59, he also announced a $5 million gift that will be used toward the coming animal wellness center, which is the next step in the zoo’s master plan. He thanked Nancy Stahl, the director of philanthropy for the zoo, for her efforts in securing the donation and explained what it means for the entire school.
“When money is raised the right way, it's because we're doing things the right way,” he said. “What we do in the classroom, what we do in the dormitory, what we do on the fields, what we do in the theater, what we do at the Trevor-Lovejoy Zoo inspires others to make Millbrook School a part of the future of more children.”
Indeed, campus is alive with growth. From the school’s growing endowment, ongoing construction of a new boys dormitory, and an ambitious Annual Fund goal, exciting developments abound.
As attendees left the event, they received a special edition of the Millbrook’s student newspaper,
The Silo (which you can now
subscribe to!), featuring an
article by editor Olivia Biller ’27 on the Trevor-Lovejoy Zoo’s updates. The parting gift perfectly capped off the evening, reminding us of what it’s all about: training students to live lives of meaning and consequence in a community that’s always there for them.
