Incoming IIIrd Former Stars in Off-Broadway Play
If you go see the currently running off-Broadway play The Saviors, you won’t just be watching a great play—you’ll be seeing a future Millbrook student in action. Ivan Howe ’30, one of the stars of the play, is an incoming freshman at Millbrook School, which is known for a robust Theater Department that gives young thespians a wealth of opportunities to grow and express themselves creatively.
Ivan co-stars with fellow teenage actor Julius Rinzel in The Saviors, which was written by Bubba Weiler and centers on two altar boys in a Midwestern Catholic church who are forced to deal with a refuge-seeking stranger. The Saviors is playing at Atlantic Theater Company’s Linda Gross Theater through August 8.
Commenting on the two young co-stars, the play’s director Jack Serio expressed a thought that connects Ivan’s work on the play perfectly to the experience he’ll enjoy at Millbrook. “There is a maturing and a push into adulthood for both of them,” Serio told New York Theatre Guide journalist Andy Lefkowitz. “I hope these two boys are able to hold onto some of their youth as they go on to adulthood, and I hope the play will catalyze a similar reflection in an audience.”
That idea of preserving youth is a value Millbrook Head of School Jonathan Downs ’98—who recently took his family to see The Saviors—regularly discusses. Under his leadership, our goal is to fully prepare students for adult lives of meaning and consequence, but to do so without truncating their childhood.

Ivan, who also starred alongside Benedict Cumberbatch in the 2024 Netflix miniseries Eric, is headed to a school that offers him the chance to be a kid while also tapping into exciting professional resources. In addition to putting on two major stage productions each year, our theater department gives students opportunities to write and stage their own plays, develop improv skills, and learn from visiting actors and writers. Some recent visitors include playwright and director Neil LaBute, veteran actor William Sadler, and producer Will Sherak P’27.
