Each school year, dozens of students make their way to Millbrook School from outside the U.S. Their experience as boarding school students can be more challenging than that of their domestic counterparts, as they’re unable to travel home to see their families as often as American students do. Millbrook’s faculty and staff understand the unique situation international students are in and do all they can to alleviate homesickness—from organizing
Affinity Groups to chaperoning trips to nearby cities during holiday breaks to cooking up tastes of home in the
dining hall.
Also, a highlight each fall semester, Millbrook hosts an international student dinner on campus. The dinner is a time for students from abroad to deepen their connections with each other and faculty over a delicious meal catered by our Aramark kitchen staff in the Class of 2018 room.
So, this past Monday, international students and faculty donned their finest formal wear, mingling and devouring hors d’oeuvres, before gathering around the long, family-style dinner table for a few opening words from
Head of School Jonathan Downs ’98. He shared about how when he was a Millbrook student, he would spend time during summer vacations with his classmates from Mexico and Japan.
“For me, that is the greatest education of boarding school,” he said. “Reading, writing, arithmetic, history, art—all of your subjects are very important. But the most important thing that can happen, mostly really because of people around this table, is that you can meet kids from all different kinds of backgrounds, with different home lives, different languages, different ethnicities, different governments, and you can become really close and good friends with them. So, I want to say thank you for coming so far to Millbrook School, for being a part of our international student community.”
This year our international community consists of students from 16 different countries. We’re so honored that each of these students and their families have chosen to share their culture here at Millbrook School!
