Building Community at the Black & Latinx BBQ

A highlight of the fall semester, the annual Black and Latinx BBQ is a tradition that brings together alumni, faculty, and students with shared heritage. Intergenerational connections are made over delicious food and fun games, and students who attend take home a gift bag filled with products from black and Latinx alumni business owners.

The event is held in the recently constructed Anthony House, and when the weather cooperates—as it did this year—everyone hangs out in lawn chairs and on the terrace. According to one faculty member who attended, it was a great chance for students to be around peers and adults who share common backgrounds in a relaxed environment.

One student who attended was Naomi Ofosuhemaa ’27. She gave the event a glowing review: “It was great playing card games with everyone, and the food was honestly so good. I also really appreciated the gift bag. It had an Amazon gift card and a bunch of other cool things. You could tell a lot of thought went into it,” she said. “I also got the chance to connect and talk with people I hadn't really spoken to before, even though we go to the same school. That made the event feel even more special to me. I’d really appreciate it if we could try to connect again sometime soon; it was such a good vibe.”

Experiences like Naomi’s are why this annual get together is essential to ensuring every student at Millbrook is known and needed. We encourage all black and Latinx members of the Millbrook community to attend next year (bookmark our events calendar to watch out for it) and see what all the hype is about!
