Before heading home for the holidays, Millbrook’s varsity hockey and basketball teams tested their mettle against some tough opponents in several New England winter tournaments. Boys basketball dominated the Storm King Tournament, and while the rest of the Mustangs didn’t take home any hardware this year, they represented the school well by competing hard. They’ll surely incorporate lessons learned through adversity faced in the winter tournaments into the rest of the season as they chase NEPSAC postseason berths.
Here are all the tournament results:
Boys Varsity Basketball, Storm King Tournament, Hill Tournament: The Mustangs breezed through the Storm King Tournament, winning each of their games against South Kent School, Storm King, and St. Thomas More by over 20 points. In the Hill Tournament, Millbrook dropped the first game 74-43 to Northfield Mount Hermon School. They then rebounded with a 68-60 win against Kiski but fell to Westtown School 74-41 in game three.
Girls Varsity Basketball, Ethel Walker Tournament: After losing 70-29 to Holderness School in the first game, the Mustangs bounced back with a 36-29 victory against Westminster School. Unfortunately, they couldn’t continue their winning ways, falling to Cushing Academy 72-40 in the final game.
Boys Varsity Hockey, Lawrenceville Tournament, Belmont Hill Tournament: The Mustangs blanked Stanstead College 3-0 in game one but fell to Belmont Hill School 3-1 in their next contest. They finished off the tournament with a 3-3 tie against tournament runner-up Choate Rosemary Hall and a 3-1 win over Lawrenceville School to take third place overall. The boys also competed in the Belmont Hill Tournament after the break, going 1-3.
Girls Varsity Hockey, Cushing Tournament: The girls fought hard but lost 1-0 in the opening game against Groton School. They then lost another close game, falling 3-1 to North Yarmouth Academy before playing to a 2-2 tie against Worcester Academy.
