On Friday and Saturday, Millbrook School hosted its annual Spring Family Weekend. With just a few weeks remaining in the 2024–2025 academic year, Millbrook parents took the opportunity to visit campus—some coming on Thursday to attend the Cum Laude Society induction ceremony—one last time before commencement.
While here, parents went through a day in the life of a student. They started the day by attending classes with their children and then attended Friday Assembly, where one brave mother participated in (and won!) a dance competition with students.
After another block of classes following Assembly, parents joined students and faculty for a delicious lunch in Casertano Hall. They had the opportunity to do a little shopping, too, as the Farm held a plant sale in the dining hall lobby as part of Earth Week and students sold art on the lawn to support local art charities.
While students finished their classes for the day, parents gathered in Flagler Memorial Chapel for a State of the School Address by Head of School Jonathan Downs ’98. The session opened with a student performance of “Vienna” by Billy Joel. Downs then began his address by connecting the message of the song—which is about slowing down and taking time to be young—to Millbrook School’s goal of preserving its students’ childhood.
Millbrook’s seventh head of school used the rest of his speech to answer the question, “Is Millbrook’s mission being accomplished?” with a resounding “Yes!” As proof of concept, he offered examples of alumni who have taken the school’s motto Non Sibi Sed Cunctis (not for oneself but for all) to heart while living lives of meaning and consequence. Downs also noted his belief that now is the hardest time in history to raise children, explaining how Millbrook’s faculty has risen to the challenge and imploring parents to follow suit. Following the State of the School Address, parents had time to visit the Trevor Zoo and explore campus before heading to the turf field for a girls varsity lacrosse game with a food-truck dinner. The day ended with a win as the Mustangs beat Frederick Gunn 17–9 under the lights. Watch the full game here:
