The first international heritage celebration of the year at Millbrook—Hispanic Heritage Month—had a little something for everyone. From special eats to the chance to move their feet to a Latin beat, students enjoyed a fulfilling weekend of cultural enrichment.
Our hard-working chefs in the
Casertano Dining Hall got things started with a special menu of Hispanic delicacies for lunch on Friday. The buffet-style meal featured classic Hispanic dishes like pernil, Peruvian chicken, fried plantains, chayote squash, and beef and cheese empanadas.
On Saturday, we welcomed Kingston-based
Dojo Dance Company to campus. The group put on a dazzling dance performance and then taught students some moves of their own. "We learned how to dance bachata, salsa, and merengue," said Assistant Dean of DEIB Tatiana Quintanilla. "The students showed up and danced away! ... It was a night to celebrate the diversity of our campus, celebrate and share the Hispanic culture with the community!"
“Watching Dojo Dance show us Argentinian tango was so cool,” added Marvelous Aderibigbe ’26, a leader in the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging (DEIB)
Community Service group that helped put on the weekend activities. “The best way I could describe it is something similar to watching the beauty of a mating dance between birds of paradise. And then being able to participate, while simple, was still pretty fun.”
Marvelous also shouted out the Hispanic snacks served in
Pulling Quad after the dance. The “secret desserts” teased in Assembly earlier that day included churros, flan, arroz con leche, spicy lollipops, and locally sourced Latino snacks.
The final treat of the weekend came on Sunday, when students white-knuckled their way through a showing of Guatemalan horror film La Llorona in the Chelsea Morrison Theater. Daniel Yang ’26, also a DEIB leader, noted that while the movie was particularly scary, students had a lot of fun watching.
He also commented on the general success of the events. “It is a great and engaging way to learn about Hispanic culture,” he explained. Marvelous seconded Yang’s evaluation. “Overall, I think it was a huge success, and I hope to do things similar to this for other heritage months.”
