Conservation Challenge Demonstrates Millbrook's Power of Community
The Millbrook community pulled together to win the Green Cup Challenge—a four-week competition that is designed to motivate schools to save energy and lower their greenhouse gas emissions. It was a neck-and-neck competition between three schools at the top—all of which are small community-based schools that already had a firm environmental ethic in place.Millbrook won through the “Power of Community”—through the accumulation of many actions from all sectors of our community. The community was elated by the final standings and results. In the fourth week of the challenge, Millbrook saved a whopping 18.58% in electrical energy usage compared to our baseline giving us a four-week average of 16.28%!
Huge effort and thought inspired the competition with lots of light bulb changes and habit changes. As a result of student, faculty, and staff efforts, in the four-week period MillbrookSchool saved a total of 26,281 kilowatt hours equaling:
- Almost $2,900 in energy costs, and
- More than 42,000 pounds (21 TONS!) of carbon dioxide
Our goal now shifts to sustaining the new habits, energy savings, and reductions in our carbon footprint.Millbrook plans to enter the Green Cup Challenge for 2008—so we’ll have another chance to focus our community on the value of energy conservation.
