Within a group of 4 other schools, all one division up, we competed well with some excellent racing.
Against a tough field of schools, Sheldon Freeman again led the team with a 6th place finish (19:13) followed closely by Archer Biggs-Chiropolos in 7th (19;22) including a sustained sprint near the finish to edge an Avon gentleman. Tyler Schmalz had a breakout race (20:10) passing John Norfleet at the finish line who also ran well (20;12). Rounding out varsity came Evan Williams (20:54), Alex Wattles (21:18) passing a few runners around the last turn, and David Westcott (21:40) who is still coming back from injury. Our JV runners also excelled with Owen Kelley leading the pack at a blistering 21:44, Trevor Burt right behind with a great finish (21:49), and Ben Marr also showing a fantastic finish passing 3 runners in the final stretch and right on the tail of a fourth (23:05). Max Morse-Golub (24:42) and Derek Brodeur (25:09) also ran great races with their best times of the year! We are still looking for a few tweaks before the New England Championships but we are in good standing to make a top three finish given this team. The strong finishes on Saturday say much about the fighting spirit and tenacity each and every boy brings to the team every time they lace up their shoes.Congratulations to one and all.
Coach Tolfree reportedly competed in a 5k of his own on Sunday: stay tuned for results. Initial rumors circulating among the team were that Coach was too fast to be timed by technology available in 2013. Whether that is actually the case seems dubious, but team parent Mike Chiropolos is determined to get to the bottom of the story and solve the mystery of Coach T's time and finish.
Edit: The coaches time was 19:43 on Hotchkiss's own XC course, a time beat by Millbrooks top two runners!
