Reknowned Photographer Claire Yaffa Speaks to Art Classes

Claire Yaffa, a celebrated freelance photographer, talks to the Gordon Parks Art History class about the man around whom the class centers.
Gordon Parks, the famous LIFE magazine photographer, director, musician, and activist, serves as the inspiration for this year's art history course. Made possible by the Kunhardt family, specifically Peter Kunhardt, Jr. '01 and the Gordon Parks Foundation, and the Meserve Kunhardt Foundation, the course culminates with a Gordon Parks exhibit in the Warner Gallery that is designed and curated by the art history class.

Claire Yaffa's long career in photography enabled her to develop a close working relationship with the late Gordon Parks. She was asked to speak to the art history class about her experience in working with Mr. Parks and her personal remembrances of him. Ms. Yaffa recalled the sincerity and approachability for which he was famous. To her, Mr. Parks was an incredible mentor and friend, which began from the first time she photographed his portrait as part of the Great Artist series. As a special gift for Millbrook School, Ms. Yaffa donated two photographs she took of Mr. Parks, one of which being that first portrait she did and the other of him with his children and grandchildren on his 93rd birthday. In addition to the photographs, she donated three of her photojournalism books, which are displayed in the Flagler Library.

The art history class will be curating the Gordon Parks exhibit beginning Saturday, May 7 in the Warner Gallery in the Holbrook Arts Center. The exhibit will run through June.
