The Millbrook Mustangs drove to Greenwich for the first squash match of the season. Missing several varsity players due to injury and illness, we recruited a JV player, Will Vollmer, to play as #7 (and #8) for this match. The goal this year is to focus on improvement every match. This first match set the tone, with all of the Millbrook players identifying growth areas to focus their efforts on for the next few weeks. All of the boys played hard, and the top four matches were all decided 3-1.
Of note was Leo Hou's performance as #1 (his first time playing for varsity) in a gritty 1-3 defeat to an equally talented player. Both spent the first game testing each other's weaknesses and left the court exhausted. The match settled into some quality squash with both players slowing down and using rails to extend points. While Leo won the second, 11-9, his fitness let him down in games three and four, and he ultimately lost 1-3.
At #2, Winston Walter started strong, winning the first game 11-5, but ultimately fell 1-3 to a talented #2. I
IIrd former Teddy Wilson lost his first game, won the second 11-3, but couldn't replicate the success for games three and four. A big thanks to fellow third former Will Vollmer for playing two matches at the #7 and #8 positions. He battled in both of them.
Our sole win came from Orion Sartison. Orion won the first two games (11-6, 11-8) by keeping his opponent moving from one corner of the court to the other. His shot placement meant he controlled the T and, therefore, the match. His opponent, however, had different ideas and won the third game 11-9 after adjusting his approach. In the fourth game, Orion relied on his athleticism to follow through on this year's mantra—get to everything. His mental toughness, combined with his speed, enabled him to force his opponent to commit errors. Orion won the fourth game 13-11 and earned our first match victory of the 2025-26 campaign.
While it wasn't the result we wanted, I was proud of how Millbrook carried itself, and we now have a foundation upon which to build.
