Millbrook-Pomfret Rivalry Remains Robust

Aaron Case
Every fall, the Mustangs of Millbrook and the Griffins of Pomfret meet for the epic Battle of Route 44. It’s all hands on deck, as the schools’ volleyball, soccer, field hockey, and cross-country teams face off to determine which band of boarding school brethren will take home the large, road-sign-shaped trophy.

This year, the Mustangs made the 2.5-hour trip along Route 44 to Pomfret, Connecticut, for the showdown with the Griffins. To ensure the Mustangs galloped into the Griffins’ lair ready to roll, the community got hype with a spirit week. Themed dress-down days had the community looking spiffy in their best pajamas, twinning outfits, sports jerseys, grayscale duds, and Millbrook merch. A boisterous pep rally in the Mills Athletic Center on Friday capped off the week and riled the Mustangs up in the best way the night before the big day.

This was not the Mustangs’ year, though, as the Griffins defended their home territory well. Millbrook’s athletes gave everything they had but were only able to pull out a couple of wins: boys varsity soccer dominated on the pitch, winning 8-1 to lock up the No. 4 seed in the NEPSAC Class C tournament, and the boys cross-country team outpaced their Pomfret opponents. The Giffins also claimed their first ever win in the Route 44 Food Fight, which is actually a win for the Millbrook community, as the Mustangs will donate 44 pounds of food to a Hudson Valley food pantry as a result.

Despite not bringing home the trophy, our valiant student-athletes returned to campus with heads held high, knowing they’d done their best. When next year’s Millbrook-Pomfret day comes, the Mustangs will be saddled up and ready to dominate on our home turf!
