Community Bids Fond Farewell to Trip Powers

Aaron Case
Since 2004, Ralph “Trip” Powers has been a powerful presence at Millbrook School as a history teacher, squash and tennis coach, and Environmental Council co-chair. Now, he’s turning the page to the next chapter of his career, resigning from his Millbrook faculty position to pursue a master’s degree in the Economics of Sustainability from Torrens University.

The entire Millbrook community honored Powers by lining the bricks to applaud him as he made one of his final trips from his classroom in Schoolhouse to the Flagler Memorial Chapel.

Later, in an address at the annual Senior Dinner, he eloquently summarized his time as a beloved teacher at Millbrook:

“I love teaching and learning. I have a deep sense of social justice and never once felt I was going to “work”—I was going to play. And so were you. I saw it in your faces when a concept clicked, when the ball landed inside the baseline, when you nailed your song, or helped someone else.”

A graduate of Emory University (B.A. in History) and Lewis & Clark College (M.A.), Powers worked on national political campaigns, including the Clinton/Gore ’92 campaign, before becoming a teacher. He was a history and government teacher at Lakeridge High School in Oregon for seven years, relocating to Millbrook in 2004 to be closer to family. While at Millbrook, he helped reshape the world history curriculum and developed a college-level Advanced Economics course.

Powers, whose children Fenway and Lila both graduated from Millbrook in 2021, made an incredible impact on our community, and his influence will be felt for decades to come. We wish him only the best as he continues his journey through life!
