Before he was an MLS pro, Edward Opoku ’15 was a star on the pitch at Millbrook, where service is a core value. Edward has carried that value with him throughout his career, eventually creating a non-profit, BeHappy, which focuses on helping the needy in his home country of Ghana.
Recently, BeHappy led its first group of volunteers to Konongo, Ghana, and the Agyereago School, which the organization supports through a lunch program. Opoku is excited about the results of the trip—especially the relationships the developed. “It went incredibly well,” he said. “During our time in Konongo and at Agyereago School, we distributed essential supplies, clothing, and food donations. We also spent meaningful time with the students, encouraging them, playing with them, and simply being present. For us, it’s never just about what we bring, but about building relationships and creating moments of joy and hope.”
The former soccer sensation isn’t pausing for a victory lap, though. He’s already planning for another trip and hopes to take an even bigger group of volunteers next time. But for now, the organization’s top priority is to build a kindergarten for the school. BeHappy is currently raising funds for the project. “Finishing this building is our top priority, as it will provide a safe and stable learning environment for the youngest students in the community,” he noted. “Seeing the need firsthand during this trip made the mission even more urgent and personal.”
Edward visited Millbrook last year for the 2025 Alumni Summit as the keynote speaker. He spoke passionately about what has led him to his current life of service and thanked the Millbrook community for its role in shaping him. You can watch his inspirational keynote address here:
