It’s finally spring in the Hudson Valley, which means it’s a perfect time for parents to check in on their children on our
beautiful 800-acre spread. And that’s exactly what they did on Friday, making the trip to campus for Spring Family Weekend.
Held twice a year, Family Weekends are a perfect blend of fun and evaluation, as parents go through a typical boarding school day with their children and meet with their advisors and teachers for progress updates. It’s also a time to celebrate achievements. Some families arrived on Thursday to
help induct an elite group of scholars into the Cum Laud Society, and on Friday afternoon, parents of underformers gathered for the Underform Awards Ceremony.

Parents enjoyed attending classes, getting a firsthand look at the rich education Millbrook provides. Our
learning spaces were packed with families learning about everything from relations vs. functions to aerodynamics and public speaking. One highlight of the class day was Spanish class, where students held a mock Shark Tank, selling products they created in Spanish.
The extra traffic on campus also presented a perfect opportunity for student clubs to raise money for charity. Student Art Supporting Opportunities (SASO), a student-founded group that sells artwork and donates the proceeds to local non-profits, offered paintings, drawings, and pottery outside the Strong Box, while the Farm collaborated with pottery class to sell plants potted in student-made ceramic planters. Profits from the potted plants went to
Angels of Light.

Head of
School Jonathan Downs ’98 wrapped up the school day with a State of the School address in the theater. He explained that the school is thriving, from admissions to advancement, and sparked lively discussions on intellectual engagement and parenting. Families then stuck around to socialize at a cocktail hour and watch athletic games before an all-school cookout.
It’s always a treat to welcome parents onto campus to share in what makes Millbrook, Millbrook. As Mr. Downs expressed in his State of the School address, “Thank you for your presence here today. Thank you for your children. Thank you for your belief in Millbrook.”
