What a great day for tennis in so many ways. We started off with Westover today, playing four singles matches outside.
Maggie jumped out to a big early lead and never looked back, as did Ireland. Sophie won her first set easily, but her opponent forced a tiebreaker in the second, in which Sophie prevailed. To finish off the match, Catherine won a tight first set and cruised through the second. The doubles started, and we were ahead in all three as Finley, Ella, ET, Vivian, B, and Lily teamed up today. However, there was a passing rain shower that ended the match.
As we were dispatching Westover, St. Luke’s was also winning against Mariannapolis. This set up a rematch from our 4-3 loss this year and the semifinals last year. Unfortunately, St. Luke's ended up on top of an incredibly competitive and wonderfully fun match to watch.
The only match to not finish was Maggie and Maddie's. Maggie just played her absolute best tennis against a very good player. Sophie never got her footing. Neither did Lily and B, but there was no lack of effort, as always. After an early rough patch, Vivian and Estee continued their winning ways, cruising to a 6-2 victory in the second. Ireland was in a back-and-forth affair, but came up on the losing end of a fun and competitive match. Catherine jumped out to a lead in the first, but her opponent fought back. She ended up dropping the first 6-4, but she regained her game and cruised to an easy 6-1 win in the second. However, the deciding tiebreaker did not go our way. The match of the day was probably inside at number two doubles for Emelia and Lucy against a team they beat earlier in the year. They were down 3-5 and 15-40 facing two match points and battled back to win the next three games. St. Luke’s regrouped to win and go ahead 6-5, and then Millbrook won another game to force the tiebreaker. No lack of effort from Emelia and Lucy, but sadly, the tiebreaker did not go our way.
I was standing with the opposing coach, and we were just marveling at the quality of doubles and how incredibly athletic and gutsy all of our players were. No one lost this match. So we wish St. Luke's well as they head to the finals again, and I want to thank everybody who came out to watch us play.
I hope you had as much fun watching these players as I did.
