Environmental Council Meeting--January 24, 2013

1) Expand Recycling

2) Improve Energy and Resource Conservation
  • This Environmental Council meeting was an opportunity for the community to view Ted Flanigan’s powerpoint, The Path to Carbon Neutrality. The Environmental Council and the Carbon Neutrality Planning Committee met jointly to see and discuss this excellent powerpoint. Mr. Powers brought his economics class to see the ppt. The inspiring and thought-provoking ppt focused on the need for energy efficiency measures on campus and the installation of a major solar field to lower our carbon footprint and make progress to carbon neutrality.
3) Promote Green Building design on campus—in new buildings and in renovation
  • The Path to Carbon Neutrality ppt highlighted the need to use geothermal heat pumps in all renovations and new buildings, but also emphasized the need to retrofit existing buildings with geothermal systems in order to reduce the use of carbon intensive heating oil on campus and to achieve carbon neutrality.
4) Raise Awareness of environmental impacts of food in Dining Hall

5) Educating for Environmental Stewardship/Sustainability
  • We hope that the numerous steps to save energy and lower our carbon footprint will be incorporated into our curriculum as the move to carbon neutrality unfolds over the next several years. Faculty should be encouraged to take advantage of all the important learning opportunities connected with carbon neutrality for our community and students.
