Science Department/Trevor Zoo Bring Their Shows on the Road

What could be more fun than holding a snake or playing with a fresh batch of gooey gak? Maybe being the ones who brought those experiences to a large group of elementary school children at the annual Family Science Night held at the Webutuck High School on April 10. As they have for many years, members of the Millbrook science department and their students brought science alive for young children and their parents.

This year Millbrook offered a Trevor Zoo Workshop led by Dr. Alan Tousignant, associate director of the zoo and Tim Slater, zoo intern. Students Rhett Roback, Kirsty Lord, Barbara Simmons, Ellie Manny, and Nick Handforth managed birds and reptiles from the zoo for up-close and personal examination by the participants at this well attended event.

Sis Roberts, science department chair, and John Havard, physics instructor, offered a combination biology-physics workshop involving experiments that focused on areas such as the senses, reflexes, and sound waves. Students helping in this area were Kayla Moore, Steve Giannone, Ashley Martini, Will Lewis, and Andrew Williamson.

Chemistry teacher Kaitlin Kessler continued the annual tradition of the “gak station” where children came to make a chemical concoction from glue, borax, and food coloring. Assisting her were Matt Gregory, Amy Belotti, and Katie Quartuccio. This was by far the most popular station of the evening and was still going strong at 8:30, after all the others had closed up shop.
