Mustangs Fall in 3-2 Thriller

L Peterson
The Mustangs traveled to Holy Child on Saturday afternoon after a full week since their last game in what turned out to be a great, close game.

The Mustang defense had a solid start in the bottom of the first inning; after Holy Child loaded the bases with no outs, Haley Malmgren ‘25 caught a line drive on the mound and fired the ball to Stella Renzi ‘26 at third for the double play. Renzi then recorded the third out to shut down the early momentum.

The Mustang solid defense continued in the second inning when a heads up relay from Maddie O’Brien ‘25 to Jaicee Downs ‘26 caught the Holy Child runner trying to take an extra base, with Renzi having a great tag at third. After some awkward turf bounces led to Holy Child having two runners on, Malmgren then shut things down with two strikeouts.

In the third inning Millbrook and Holy Child traded runs. In the top of the inning, Downs got the inning started, followed by Malmgren, to set the stage for Hailey Mesard ‘25 to score Downs on an RBI single.

The fourth inning again saw a quick back and forth between both teams. Malmgren faced only 3 batters, with two strikeouts while catcher Abby Hylan ‘25 threw down to second to catch a Holy Child runner stealing.

Holy Child plated two runs in the bottom of the 5th inning, capitalizing on some Millbrook defensive miscues and some timely hits. The Millbrook defense shut down any additional scoring in the 6th inning.

Millbrook went into the 7th inning fighting. Downs narrowed the Holy Child lead after her solo home run. Holy Child made some good defensive plays to keep Millbrook from plating another run to tie the game.

We have a big week coming up: at Harvey on Wednesday, at Kent on Friday, home v. Marianapolis on Saturday.

Highlights:
Jaicee Downs ‘26: 4 hits, 2 runs
Hailey Mesard ‘25: 1 RBI
