2009 New England Champions!

On a beautiful spring afternoon, the BV tennis team traveled to Choate to compete in the final of the New England Class C Championships. After eliminating Watkinson and Wooster in the quarters and semis, the boys were looking forward to the rematch with Beaver Country Day who knocked them out of the tournament last year. Doubles took the courts first with Colin and Sam at #1, Bud and Dan at #2, and Will and Drew at #3. The #1s fought hard but dropped their match 8-2 while the #2s played exceptionally well and came away with the victory 8-5. The #3s went all the way to a tie breaker after being down 4-0, but unfortunately lost by two points, giving the single doubles point to Beaver. Alex and Nick played solid tennis at #4 exhibition and won their match 8-5. Singles took the courts next with a hot start, and as the match progressed, it was evident this one was going to be close. Colin at #1 was up against a terrific player from Beaver who rarely missed, and came off first in a losing effort. Beaver needed only two more points to win the match and were well on their way when Drew at #6 also dropped his match in a very close straight set battle. 3-0 Beaver. Things looked bleak for the Mustangs but the tide started to slowly turn as Sam recorded the teams' first point with an inspired victory over his #3 opponent. Then Bud completed his #4 match in convincing fashion in straight sets, playing the best tennis of his season with huge ground strokes and filthy serves. Will also played excellent baseline tennis to comfortably win his #5 match in straight sets which tied the overall team match at 3. With only one point remaining to win the tournament, it all came down to Dan at #2 and he did not disappoint! After crushing his opponent in the first set 6-2, he maintained his composure in the second to win 6-4, completing the remarkable comeback win for his team 4-3. The boys jumped the fence and rushed the court to celebrate together the end to a magical season and winning the New England Championships!
