Berkshire Nail Biter

The boys traveled to Berkshire today to take on a talented line up that included a new PG from the Bahamas who played #1. The #1 from last year was playing at #4 this year so the home team had reloaded indeed with many new top players, and it showed.  Our #1 doubles team Colin and Dan, went ahead 3-0 before dropping the match 8-5, while Bud and Sam at #2 met a similar fate 8-4.  Despite the fact that Drew and Will won their doubles at #3, the Mustangs lost the doubles point, although not by much. Singles began thereafter and it looked early on that the favored Bears team would roll on this windy afternoon. None of the singles matches were going well for the Mustangs. Collin could not find any holes in the defense of his opponent and lost quickly 2 and 0, bringing the team match to 2-0. Drew at #6 split sets and although he did his best, his super tie break for the third went the way of the home team giving Berkshire a dominant 3-0 lead and needing one more to clinch. It seemed like they were going to get it soon, with both Bud at #5 and Will at #6 losing their first sets and falling behind early in the 2nd.  Sam at #3 split his sets and struggled to maintain his composure in the super tie break with an opponent that was crushing forehand winners. The boys were on the brink of defeat with the real possibility of a 7-0 sweep looming when all of a sudden, the wind shifted...
Dan at #2 crushes his opponent 2 and 1 for the first visiting team point and the sweep killer.  What? Sam miraculously finishes off his opponent in the tie breaker 10-7 for the second point. The match now stands at 3-2!  Could this really be turning around?  Will, after dropping the first set, then wins his second set 7-5 and pulls off a wild come back in the 3rd set and wins 10/6 for the 3rd point of the match! The score is 3 all and it's down to Bud's match, again!
Bud, after resetting and winning the second set, played inspired 3rd set tennis and raised the level of his game when it mattered most. With a ripping back hand winner to force a set point, Bud closed it out by an nonreturnable forehand to win 10-8 and give his team the 4-3 comeback win in dramatic fashion!

This was the second match in a row for the Mustangs, the first being Suffield, that was won by two points, 10-8 in the third and probably the greatest comeback win the coach has ever seen!
Final 4-3 Millbrook
