Lady Mustangs Corral Cheshire Cats

Gordie MacKenzie
On a beautiful, sunny fall afternoon, Millbrook played host to Cheshire Academy. While the game was scheduled for a 3:30pm kickoff, Cheshire's bus driver took the scenic route and delayed Cheshire's arrival until 4:00pm - as a result, Millbrook enjoyed an hour and half warm-up ... Ugh!  With Cheshire's having some serious bus-legs, and knowing they had a couple of dangerous players up front, the team wanted to set the tone of the game, and make sure to not give their scoring threat too much space to get free.  It would take only 5 minutes before Millbrook got on the scoreboard first - some terrific combination play in the middle 3rd, set up Gabby Sartori '18 slotting a through ball behind Cheshire's backline for Suwaibatu Mohammed '19 to run onto, and finish the way she knows how. Mohammed would add two more, one of which was assisted by Bailey Tymeson '20, and the other collecting a loose ball in the box and slamming it in the upper corner.  Although Millbrook had the upper hand on the scoreboard, Cheshire had no desire to fold, and continued to press Millbrook's backline with quick, long-ball counters.  But for every counter-attack, Millbrook's defensive wall of Cavanaugh '18, Carter '18, Armah '29, Cumming '18, and Almgren '20 had an equal response. The first half would end with The Lady Mustangs up 3-0.

The 2nd half was not much different than the first half as Millbrook controlled the majority of play. With 26:42 remaining in the game, Mohammed combined with Jalia Musah '21 who used her speed to dribbled past Cheshire's defensive core and buried her shot.  Noteable play was also seen by the holding midfielders Elwell '18, Whitney '19, Garshagen '19, and Chamberlin '19 who did a great job of transitioning the ball through the middle 3rd. Almgren would finish the day making 8 saves, and recording her 3rd shutout of the season. Overall, it was a good team effort today, and hopefully the team can continue their winning ways when they take on long time rival Rye Country Day on Saturday.
