St. Lukes Score Late Goal Tie Millbrook

Gordie MacKenzie
The Lady Mustangs made the trip to New Cannan, CT. to take on Class C rival, St. Lukes. From the openning whistle, both teams worked hard to control the middle of the field, and therefore move into each other's final third. St. Lukes would hold the slight edge with regards to possession, however, Millbrook's backline of Carter '18, Cumming '18, Armah '19, and Cavanaugh '18, stymied any threat St. Lukes threw at them.  St. Lukes best opportunity to get on the scoreboard first came when Caroline Lau received a timely threw-ball and found herself 1 on 1 with Millbrook's keeper Elise Almgren '20.  Almgren came out to challenge and managed to make a kick-save to steer the shot wide. The half would end with both teams knotted at 0-0.

The second half would see Millbrook come out with a greater level of intensity and as a result put St. Lukes on their heels. At 29:49 into the half, Jalia Musah '21 collected a lose ball in the middle of the field, and with a burst of speed, streaked into St. Lukes defensive third. With a lone defender to beat, Musah drew the defender which freed up Suwaibatu Mohammed '20 - Musah slipped a pass to Mohammed who placed her shot neatly into the back corner of the net.  The lead would hold until 3 minutes remaing in the game when a combination pass down the flank found Gall for St. Lukes who hit a crossing shot 2 feet from the touch line - rather than finding a teammate on the other end, the shot sailed over Almgren's head caught the far post side of the net for the tying strike. The final whistle sounded with both teams tied at 1-1.

While the team would have liked to have another W in the win column, the coaches were proud of the effort the team showed.  Additional shoutouts go to Anni Elwell '18 and Carolyn Whitney '19 who did a commendable job of developing our counter-attack. Next up, Westover on Parents Weekend.
