Lady Mustangs Dominate The Gunn

Gordie MacKenzie
On another hot and humid afternoon, the girls boarded the buses for a relatively short trip to Washington, CT. Having played Gunnery in a round robin play-day earlier, we knew Gunnery had a strong keeper, and when they got into the 18, they were dangerous.  The game plan was simple - come out with intensity, get on the scoreboard early (and if possible, often), and lastly limit Gunnery's shots.  All 3 objectives were achieved.  After knocking the ball around and trying to find our rythum, Suwaibatu Mohammed '19 got us on the scoreboard first (and then proceeded to add 3 more), with 2 of her goals assisted by Lizzy Carter '18. New commer, Jalia Musah '21, would add another one to bring the first half to a close.

The second half was very much like the first as Millbrook kept the pressure on. Six minutes into the half, centerback Adeliade Armah '19 received a backpass outside the 18 and fired a low shot which beat Gunnery's keeper to the near post.   Sixteen minutes later, Musah would be taken down inside the box and awarded a PK - she would convert to finish the scoring. All players saw quite a bit of playing time which was great to see.  The highlight of the game was Helen Apollon '19 filling in for starting keeper, Elise Almgren. Although Helen would only see 3 shots, the coaches appreciated her willingness to step in - and was credited with her first shutout!

Next up, the Lions of Kent.
