Rye Toasted

The Squash Mustangs hosted a talented team from Rye today and were optimistic but realistic. Rye is a perennial "A" team and Millbrook has never beaten them. The evens were up first and right away it was clear that the Rye team had the edge. Rjay at #2 had trouble again staying out of the tin and after a good first game, dropped the next three losing 3-1. Henry R at #4 was up against a very tough opponent who had all the shots, losing in 3, while Dylan extended his match to 4 games before losing 3-1. Zack T at #8 exhibition went all the way to 5 games but succumbed 3-2.
A little disheartened after getting shutout in the first round and down 3-0, the boys gathered themselves for round two. As the odd matches progressed, there was a sense that the momentum was turning and little by little, reports came in that there were close matches. Sam R at #7 was off first with a hard fought 3-1 win to give the boys their first win. Second came Z. Hollander at #1 with another well played 3-1 win. Isaiah M at #3 was in a real battle and for the second straight match went to 5 games. His confidence going into the fifth was unshakable and his opponent seemed demoralized as he dominated the last game to win in 5. With the team match now tied at 3, it all came down to Teddy M. at #5. Both teams converged on court #3 to support their players as the boys traded blows. Down 2-1, Teddy used a skilled combination of drops and drives to keep his opponent off balance.  Now in the 5th game, both players were exhausted and it was anyone's match. Teddy pulled away only to have the Rye player come back to even the score. Shouts of encouragement and support from the crowd seemed to inspire McLanahan and with shear determination and will, Teddy ripped a clean cross court winner to win the match 3-2, 11-9 in the 5th, notching the first ever historic Mustang team win vs Rye!
