Students Collaborate to Create Improv Festival

Millbrook and Berkshire students are collaborating to bring the first annual School Improv Festival Thing (SIFT) event to Millbrook this Friday, December 2, at 7:00 p.m.

Final student performances will debut at 8:30 p.m. for the larger community in the Chelsea Morrison Theater.

“This is not the first time that we have collaborated with Berkshire,” says Director of Theater Elaine Lifter, who has collaborated with Berkshire's theater director, Jesse Howard, in the past. “Last winter, both schools produced the musical In The Heights, and we were able to attend and support each other at our respective schools, which was a great experience for the students.”

It is this collaboration that inspired the concept of creating a improvisation festival. “We test piloted the concept last year, and it was a success,” says Ms. Lifter.

This year, over 40 students are participating in the festival, which will begin with some short-form games to encourage teamwork among the student performers. Following this warm-up, students will be presented with a predetermined set of variables and parameters for the scenes to be created within.

“While the students have had input in creating practice models of this exercise in preparation for the performance, the variables presented on Friday evening will be a surprise to them. This endeavor will allow them to test their collaborative skills and reach beyond their comfort zones,” said Ms. Lifter

It should also ensure a fun and exciting show! We hope you can join us tomorrow evening to celebrate the art of improvisation or be sure to check out our online photo gallery for images from the event.
