Pass, Set, Hit: Volleyball is a New Fall Sport

Complementing football (our newest fall sport for boys), volleyball will become Millbrook's newest fall sport for girls beginning in the fall of 2016.

With growth of our student population to just over 300 students, student athletic programs need to grow accordingly. With the addition of football for our boys in the fall, it made perfect sense to add volleyball as a competitive team option for girls. There is high interest in the sport among current and prospective students, and we have a talented coaching staff on hand and ready to dive in.

We are excited to join a competitive independent school league and will initially form a team of 14 girls to play a JV schedule in the 2016 season. Our plan is to move to a varsity program/schedule in the fall of 2017.

Teams already on our game schedule include:
- Berkshire
- Westover
- Hotchkiss
- Kent

Volleyball's head coach will be current Chair of the English Department Erin Downs, a 4-year letter winner and 2-year volleyball captain at Division I Davidson College. Ms. Downs was also the head coach of the varsity girls volleyball program at Providence Day School in Charlotte, NC for 3 years. She will be ably assisted by Luke Westman, who will be joining our faculty in August. Mr. Westman was a Massachusetts All-State boys volleyball player and student-assistant volleyball coach at Colby College. Director of Communications Michelle Blayney has coached volleyball at the high school level for over 20 years and will also assist in the program.

Director of Athletics Billy Thom shares, "We are extremely excited to be offering a new interscholastic sport for our female student-athletes in the fall. Volleyball will prove to be a fast-paced and athletically competitive opportunity for many of our girls."
