The College Process: Aspiring and Celebrating

The college counseling team continues to "thread the needle” by supporting aspirational choices with appropriate plans, strengthening relationships with colleges across the nation, continuing our focus on the right fit, and celebrating the success of each senior. We also continue to build a four-year program to be sure that no matter when students join our community, they know our office and work with our office throughout their time at Millbrook.

Over the past year, over 100 college representatives visited campus to provide information sessions for our students. They also each met with a member of our college counseling team to learn more about Millbrook. Many stayed for tours and lunch in the dining hall.

At the end of January, we welcomed the parents and families of over 70 of our current Vth formers for our annual Vth Form College Kickoff program.  We were guided by an exceptional and well-rounded team of admissions deans from Southern Methodist University, University of Chicago, American University, and Sewanee: The University of the South.

Those same four individuals eagerly joined us again in late April for a webinar for all Vth formers and their parents (“College Admissions in the Wake of COVID-19”).  Our goal was to help ease some of the fears and answer some of the questions of everyone in the wake of the pandemic. What types of changes are we seeing with standardized testing? What happens if I can’t take a standardized test? What does test-optional mean? With colleges being closed, how do I learn about the school if I can’t visit? The turnout was excellent and the webinar was well-received.

In April we reached out to young Millbrook alumni, who are currently in college or recent graduates, to ask for their assistance with our students' most pressing question above - what to do when we cannot visit? We are grateful to all of our alums, nearly 100, who have offered support to our current Vth formers as they attempt to learn more about colleges during this volatile time.

While we have been very busy assisting Vth formers in the college process this spring, we have been celebrating the incredibly good news that our VIth formers have been receiving. While some news is still a bit delayed due to the pandemic, we have updated our college list, and we are celebrating college news in our ongoing tributes to our VIth formers on social media. We encourage you to visit our Instagram and/or Facebook pages to leave a comment and help us recognize all that our seniors have accomplished.
